MIGRATING WINDOWS 7 FROM SMALL HDD TO LARGE HDD

MIGRATING WINDOWS 7 FROM SMALL HDD TO LARGE HDD

I bought a new laptop and needed to move windows 7 64 bit from a 80gb hard drive to a 500gb hard drive.

I spoke with a friend on how to proceed and he lent me his copy of aomei partition assistant technician edition.

I had my doubts but he said, “partition assistant is amazing… nothing works better for what I want…”

Sure enough, he was right…

I had bought a Sabrent USB 3.0 to SATA Dual Bay External Hard Drive Docking Station…
That did not work for me…
in either standalone copy mode or attached to pc…

I ended up using a hard drive enclosure sata interface and partition assistant…

Here are my steps…

1. boot my laptop… login…
2. connect my larger hard drive via usb and hard drive sata enclosure… verify its detected
3. format larger hard drive… delete efi partition…
4. opened partition manager
4a. selected option to clone drive
5. selected source drive
6. selected destination drive
7. ran partition manager… it finished… then swapped out small hard drive… rebooted pc and setup hard drive
8. hard drive unbootable… swapped drives…
9. redid steps 1-7 but in step 4a selected option to clone os
10. rebooted and hard drive unbootable
11. rebooted and went to boot menu… the f12 thing… I couldn’t boot into hard drive… my options showed raid and windows boot manager… yeah my laptop was wierd… I picked raid… something else might work for you… in any case it booted…
12. I went into partition assistant and selected drive and changed from gpt to mbr…
13. rebooted… worked great since…

You might have a shorter path… but I figure this would be helpful for someone…
