TROUBLESHOOTING LINE NOISE ON THE PHONE LINE…

I had to do this recently at a friend’s house. Troubleshooting the phone line noise was simpler than I thought…

You will need a good phone that uses a phone cord. both must work perfectly…

Lets take it step by step…

Testing to isolate phone jack…
Unplug all phone equipment and then use one phone to check all the jacks…
Then verify your results with a secondary phone…

If phone jack is ok…
plug in your good phone… and verify that no noise on the line..
plug in each equipment one by one.. making sure to check for noise after each connection…
if you good phone suddenly has noise after a new equipment is plugged in… then that equipment is the problem.

Lets say that you tried both tests and you cannot isolate the line noise
The noise maybe coming from the phone line external to your house…
Take your good phone with its corresponding phone cord outside the house….
Find the Phone box that runs to your house….
and if it is not sealed with a tie wrap or otherwise sealed against tampering… try the following…
The reason for the sealing issue is that some phone companies will void any warranty if you break their seal…
Ok… now where were we…. yes… testing… open the line box and plug your phone into the test jack… if the test jack has no noise then the issue is inside your house… call phone company or get an electrician… if the test jack has noise then call the phone company… the issue is coming from outside your house… the phone company’s equipment is bad…
